Visualization Engineer

FortiusOne develops some of the most advanced and interactive geospatial and data visualization on the web. Underneath we have a powerful platform built primarily with Ruby on Rails that can slice and dice data to serve to visualizations using a mixture of Flash, JavaScript and Canvas through open-source and in-house libraries.

We're looking for a world-class visualization engineer to take the lead on developing the next generation of our GeoIQ platform that powers the popular online site GeoCommons. You'll work within the engineering team to design and implement solutions in a fast-paced and agile work environment. We highly value innovation and solving the hard problems in interestingand compelling ways.

Responsibilities

• Lead role in designing and developing the visualization and graphical analytics of the FortiusOne GeoIQ platform and GeoCommons website.
• Investigate and implement new technologies that provide for dynamic, realtime visualization of large data.
• Prototype visual human interfaces utilizing user-centered design principles.
• Responsible for considering network communications optimization, and gracefuldegradation of visualizations for supporting older browsers or bandwidth restricted users.
• Provide feedback and design additional API and formats for integrating built-in and third-party components into the GeoIQ platform.
• Work as a member of a smart, fast-paced engineering team and closely within the entire company to match customer needs, future company goals, and cutting-edge technology.
• Be able to discuss technology and the platform with other developers on the web and at meetings and conferences.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Demonstrable advanced expertise in Flash/ActionScript 3 (3+ years)
• Experience with Geospatial mapping (2+ years)
• 5+ years experience and a proven record of success in developing web applications; including elements of user experience, information architecture, and simplicity in design and presentation
• Interest and experience in other visualization tools such as Processing,Canvas/SVG, JavaScript rendering, etc. as well as continually learning and experimenting with new technology
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required
• Excellent communication and writing skills
• Ability to work across multiple products and projects while prioritizing and managing time and resources effectively

And above all, you should be excited to quickly iterate through ideas, provide additional insight and work both independently and part of the team

Additional Desirable Experience

• Participation in Open-Source software projects and communities. In particular ModestMaps, OpenLayers, Flot/Raphael charting libraries
• Experience with scientific/numerical computing and visualization, gaming experience or similar
• Familiarity with Ruby on Rails
• Visualization on mobile platforms, and definitely familiarity with Atom, JSON, AMF and other formats
• Familiarity with Unix/Linux operating system and development environments

Systems Engineer

FortiusOne deploys our advanced geospatial visualization and analysis platform to a wide variety of environments: from large-scale rack-mounted servers in Enterprises, on Cloud infrastructure for the public web, to offline servers, USB sticks, and software deployments. FortiusOne's GeoIQ uses Ruby on Rails, as well as a combination of other open-source components in C and Java deployed on Redhat and CentOS Linux and Mac OS X.

We're looking for a systems engineer that knows how to build a scalable architecture, support deployments and configurations for a number of customers, and is experienced in security and scaling. Ideally you run Linux servers at home or for your projects and feel comfortable talkingabout TCP/IP, Load Balancing, or SSD vs. increasing RAM.

Requirements

• 2+ years of experience as a lead/sole system administrator in a small company
• 3+ years of hands-on experience with the following hardware & software products:
  • Linux servers and other UNIX variants
  • Apple and Windows environments
  • Virtualization Products (VMWare, Amazon Web Services)
  • Internet firewalls
  • Network switches
  • Monitoring systems
  • Development application setup – e.g. Redmine, Git, et al.
  • LDAP and authentication systems
  • Database systems at a basic level (this is not a DBA position)
• Scripting and task automation tools
• Hardware/software acquisition and vendor management
• Excellent documentation and organization
• Excellent customer service ethic and attitude
• Proven ability to work as part of a team and to be self-managing
• Ability to deal with the unexpected
• Bachelor's degree (minimum); or equivalent experience preferred
